We all knew exercise is good for our health. However, by how much was always on the top of mind of every procrastinator and data scientist alike.
Euan Ashley, a professor and chair of the Stanford Department of Medicine finally articulated what we’ve all been waiting for:
“Exercise [improves every system in your body] and makes your chance of disease in that system less: 60% less likely to have atrial fibrillation. 50% less likely to have diabetes. 70% less likely to fracture your hip. 50% less likely to have colon cancer. 25% less likely to have breast cancer… you’re much less likely to die.”
But what really grabbed my attention and important to us entrepreneurs is that a brisk walking pace can buy you (average) five minutes of longer life. This was further highlighted and published in PLOS Medicine Journal:
- Brisk walking: 1 hour => 3.2 hrs of extra life
- Biking: 1 hour => 4.5 hrs of extra life
- Running: 1 hour => 9 hrs of extra life
- Jumping rope/jacks: 1 hour (this sounds go boring…) => 11 hrs of extra life.
I’m excited about this because it helps me objectively visualize and gamify my gains. Time to go offline and create a spreadsheet 🙂
No more excuses guys. I’ll catch all y’all later, on the healthier side.
