Lessons on Scaling Global Teams, Learned the Hard Way

Scaling a non-local team effectively is a strategic move that can significantly enhance a company’s growth and affordability. Did you know hiring engineers from Poland is generally 1/3rd the cost of an engineer in the US, but the same quality?

Here are some key strategies to consider:

1. Leverage Technology for Communication: You NEED well built communication tools (ie. Zoom or Google Hangout) to bridge the gap between team members spread across different locations. Whther you like it or not, burning after-hour oil will be a requirement for owners and real-time communication and collaboration. This will ensure your team members stay connected and aligned with company goals.

2. Implement Flexible Work Policies: Flexibility not only broadens the talent pool but also increases employee satisfaction and retention, contributing to a more stable and productive team. Generally, with a team under 100, everyone knows who’s hauling ass and who’s slacking off. You just have to pay attention and adjust your headcount accordingly.

3. Focus on Clear Objectives and KPIs: Establish clear objectives and key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure that all team members understand their roles and responsibilities. This clarity helps maintain focus and accountability, driving the team towards common goals despite geographical distances. As long as your team members are meeting KPIs, let them be as flexible as they want so as to not burning them out.

  • 4. Invest in Cultural Integration: Building a cohesive team culture is crucial for non-local teams. Organize virtual team-building activities and regular check-ins to foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie among team members. Encouraging open communication and cultural exchange can also enhance understanding and collaboration.
  • 5. Utilize Project Management Tools: Implement project management tools like Asana, Trello, or Jira to streamline workflows and track progress. Use something as simple as Google Docs, but you definitely need to have pen on paper somewhere to make sure the teams are on the same page and held accountable. These tools provide visibility into project timelines and deliverables, enabling teams to manage tasks efficiently and meet deadlines.
  • 6. Outsource Strategically: You are obviously considering outsourcing certain functions to specialized agencies or freelancers. Do your research though; certain companies (countries, even) are known for certain types of talent compared to others. For example, I love hiring designers from Vietnam; they are on-point and I have no idea why! This approach can reduce operational costs and allow the core team to focus on strategic initiatives. Outsourcing also provides access to a broader range of skills and expertise, enhancing the team’s capabilities.

7. Prioritize Training and Development: Invest in training and development programs to upskill team members and keep them updated with industry trends. Continuous learning opportunities not only improve performance but also boost employee morale and engagement.

8. Monitor Performance and Provide Feedback: Trickling feedback into the team will be less abrasive, I promise you. Regularly assess team performance and provide constructive feedback to ensure continuous improvement. Implement performance review systems that recognize achievements and identify areas for development, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability.

9. Adapt to Local Markets: For businesses expanding into new regions, understanding local markets and customer preferences is essential. Encourage team members to share insights about their local markets and tailor strategies accordingly to enhance market penetration and customer satisfaction.

10. Embrace Diversity and Inclusion: A diverse team brings varied perspectives and ideas, driving innovation and creativity. Promote an inclusive work environment where all team members feel valued and respected, regardless of their location or background.

By implementing these strategies, you can more effectively scale, achieving faster growth and improved affordability. This approach not only enhances operational efficiency but also positions the company for long-term success in a competitive global market. There’s a reason every tech company is NOT just local.
